Air Force Day 2023: The Indian Air Force is celebrating its 91st anniversary today. After 72 years of such practice, the Indian Air Force will unveil its new flag in a grand parade on Air Force Day, which is being celebrated in Prayagraj on Sunday to better symbolize its values.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has stated, “On October 8, an important day in the history of the Indian Air Force will be marked. On this historic day, the Chief of the Air Staff will unveil the new Air Force flag.”
This day is celebrated with grand parades and events throughout the country. On this day, IAF personnel are honored for their dedication and professionalism.
History of This Day: The Indian Air Force, also known as the Bharatiya Vayu Sena, was established in India by the British Empire on October 8, 1932. The first operational squadron came into existence on April 1, 1933, with six RAF-trained officers and 19 Hawai Sepoys (air soldiers). The initial inventory of the IAF included four Westland Wapiti biplanes as part of the “A” Flight of No.1 Squadron.
In January 1950, India became a republic within the British Commonwealth, and the “Royal” prefix was removed from the Indian Air Force.
Significance of This Day: The Air Force Day parade is an annual event organized in commemoration of the establishment of the IAF. The parade showcases the capabilities of the Indian Air Force and its commitment to the nation’s defense.

A magnificent airshow will be held in the Sangam area today, featuring several aircraft, including Chinook, Cheetah, Jaguar, Apache, and Rafale, showcasing their power. Comment: Traditionally, the parade was held outside the national capital until 2021. It was hosted at the Hindon Airbase near Delhi. Last year, it took place in Chandigarh.
